Nissan as having the highest level of skill and technique
Normally, engines are assembled on the production line in stages, with parts being fitted to the engines one at a time as they arrive on the line.
The GT-R VR38 engine is hand-assembled by a dedicated technician who is responsible for one engine at a time until completion.
The engine is assembled by a technician who is responsible for attaching parts, tightening bolts, and measuring and adjusting the gap between parts.
The skilled craftsmen work on each engine to achieve quality equal to or better than that of a race car engine. The craftsmen put their mastery and wealth of experience into each engine.
After years of hard work and dedication, they have perfected their skills, and as master craftsmen at the top of their game, they are able to provide quality certification for Nissan’s iconic GT-R engine. Each “Takumi” leaves his own name on the GT-R engine as proof of quality.
Among these Takumi, Takumi Kurosawa served as Team Leader, which is the highest honor of all Takumi. Craft Sports has now signed a contract with Mr. Kurosawa, the legendary master of the GT-R.
Kurosawa built R32 to R35 engines one by one with passion and pride as a master craftsman at Nissan Motor’s historic Yokohama plant.He set out on his own to explore the full potential of the GT-R and he builds the ultimate engines by overhauling them.
There is the knowledge, experience and impeccable skill that he has cultivated over many years. Precise techniques and absolute sense without the slightest deviation. This is truly a Godlike work.
Takumi and Craft Sports have developed special menus to bring out the ultimate potential of the RB26 and VR38 engines which are based on the original engines.
Craft Sports, a GT-R specialist dealer, and Takumi Kurosawa, a master of the GT-R, have teamed up to launch a major project that will leave its mark on the long history of the GT-R.

Basics of Takumi’s overhaul
For early detection of problems and preventive maintenance, all parts are thoroughly disassembled and measured, and each part is checked with Takumi’s discerning eye.
He will also restore the engine´s performance through manual cleaning with carbon remover and sandblasting if necessary. Once performance has been carefully restored, the engine is upgraded as requested.
All wearing parts such as rubbers, O-rings, seals and gaskets, oils and greases are replaced. We do not reuse bolts that may be subject to metal fatigue. We replace them all to improve quality.
Then, he takes measures and makes adjustments based on the experience and knowledge of Takumi, the master craftsman who knows the GT-R engine inside out.
High-precision valve clearance adjustment
The Skyline GT-R was built to win races. The minimum requirement to enter Group A was to produce 2,500 units and four seats over a 12-month period. Since the engine was designed for mass production in order to participate in the race, the accuracy of the RB26 is somewhat inferior to that of the R35 VR38. In addition, the technology was not as well established as it is today. The RB26 is assembled with high precision valve clearance adjustment and assembly, incorporating the technology of today’s top-of-the-line VR38 engines.
Considering the thermal expansion, the RB26 is controlled in a room with constant temperature and humidity for 7 hours for cast iron and 4 hours for aluminum to ensure that the dimensions are in line with the design. After that, the clearance between the intake and exhaust valves is then adjusted to the micron level to ensure that all 24 valves open and close without error.
Increasing engine power aerodynamically
The key to increasing engine power is how much air (air-fuel mixture) is taken in.
The more air is taken in, the more explosive power is generated. This is why Takumi’s engine menu focuses on “aerodynamics”.
For each menu, we change the camshafts, change the fuel injection time by changing the open/close timing, adjust the ports, and so on.
Correction process for uneven stepped surface port
Parts such as cylinder heads, cylinder blocks, and manifolds are manufactured by casting.
After casting, the surface of cast products has many fine uneven areas peculiar to casting.
This surface is called the casting surface.
Since over-polishing increases the diameter, Takumi´s many years of experience and skill are used to achieve the perfect polish of the surface.
The “stepped surface” is the bumps and burrs that occur at the joints between the seat ring and cylinder during the cast cylinder head manufacturing process. If left untreated, it would affect flow and efficiency in the ports.
Our aim is to increase efficiency by increasing the inner diameter of the ring while correcting the stepped surface in the port.
This is one of the reasons why the performance is higher than when the car was new. The process is done by hand with great care by Takumi.
High-precision weight balancing to 1/100 g
The weight of the V-type engine is meticulously balanced. This is a high-precision technique mastered only by Takumi whose name remains on the VR38 engine. Accuracy of the weight balancing is 1/100 g. Even the top and bottom of the connecting rods are balanced with high precision.
This technique is also used to balance the RB 26. This is the highest precision of Takumi
who has been making the VR38 for a long time.
No need to change the automobile safety inspection certificate.
Craft Sports’ upgrade is based on the factory version, and focuses on fine-tuning. Therefore, we do not change the displacement such as cylinder block replacement, etc. All items on the menu are subject to automobile safety inspections.
Production stoppage is no longer an issue!

NISMO Heritage Parts are available for discontinued parts based on original Nissan parts.
In addition, for parts that cannot be covered by original parts we use external parts as needed.
The biggest concern for Skyline GT-R owners is the discontinuation of parts. At Craft Sports, we will stock new parts while they are still available. Craft Sports will stock new parts while they are still available.

The RB26DETT is an inline 6-cylinder engine that was produced by Nissan from 1984 to
2004.
It was developed exclusively for the Skyline GT-R, Nissan’s famous sports car.
Today, engine overhauls are essential for the RB26 engine.

VR38 DETT Engine Menu
(NISSAN GT-R R35)
New twin-turbo V6 engine designed exclusively for the R35GT-R launched in November 2007.
The engine delivers unrivaled power for a Japanese car and powerful torque from a practical rev range. The engine has been developed and designed not only for power, but also for practicality so that it can withstand circuit driving in its normal running condition. The VR38 has been improved almost every year along with the car.
The VR38 is made up of 374 parts assembled by Takumi’s hands without the use of machinery.
The skills, experience and know-how of Takumi who has been building the VR-38 are fully incorporated into our overhaul and upgrade menu, which is tailored to the model.
The fact that the VR38 set a new record at the Nürburgring of 7 minutes 8.679 seconds – the fastest time set by a production car in 2013 – is a testament to Takumiś skill.
Until MY 10, valve clearances were not adjusted at the time of manufacturer. All VR-38 engines, including those from MY 11 onwards, are supplied with high-precision valve clearance adjustment. This improves engineś quiet performance and response.

Throttle Refresh & Strengthen Set (RB26:2, 3)
Refresh lip seal, return spring collar and throttle. Prevents air leakage when boost is increased. Also serves as a measure to prevent air leakage when boost is increased.

WPC Treatment (RB26:2, 3 VR38:3, 4)
WPC treatment is a surface reformation technology in which compressed gas is mixed with fine particles of the desired material on the surface of a metal product, and the mixture is then impinged at high speed.The result is an even oil film in the cylinder, which improves the fatigue strength, sliding properties and seizure resistance of the metal. It also reduces noise and improves response.

DLC Coating (RB 26:2, 3 VR 38:3, 4)
DCL coating is a technology that achieves an unprecedented low wear coefficient by creating a nano-level thin film on the metal surface. The main purpose is to improve wear resistance.
By applying the coating to the sensitive piston rings, the air-tightness of the cylinder can be maintained. This helps to reduce the heat from wearing and prevent seizure to improve engine life.

Crystal Painting (RB 26 and VR 38)
Crystal paint is a special paint technique that creates a rough, unique shrink pattern, unlike normal paint which has a smooth surface.
The cover is the face of the engine compartment. It can be painted in the color of your choice to express your particular style and personality.
The paint also has the effect of reducing tappet noise as well as aesthetic appeal.

The common desire with the engineers at the time of development was to ¨unleash 100% of the potential of the original factory parts and create the best genuine engine with outstanding performance”.
But both VR 38 and RB 26 are after all mass-produced engines. Efficiency and cost were the top priorities. The passion of the engineers and myself has never been able to be realized anywhere until now.
Craft Sports was the one who said to me, “Let’s build the real VR 38 and RB 26 together”.
I thought I could build a real GT-R engine here.
Craft Sports truly understood my aspirations, and they also provided me with a better environment than it was at Nissan.
There are a lot of custom and tuned parts on the market, but they are not the real thing. The real engine is the one with 100% of the potential of the original parts. I can make that happen.
