Normally, engines are assembled on the production line in stages, with parts being fitted to the engines one at a time as they arrive on the line.
The GT-R VR38 engine is hand-assembled by a dedicated technician who is responsible for one engine at a time until completion.


The engine is assembled by a technician who is responsible for attaching parts, tightening bolts, and measuring and adjusting the gap between parts.
The skilled craftsmen work on each engine to achieve quality equal to or better than that of a race car engine. The craftsmen put their mastery and wealth of experience into each engine.


After years of hard work and dedication, they have perfected their skills, and as master craftsmen at the top of their game, they are able to provide quality certification for Nissan’s iconic GT-R engine. Each “Takumi” leaves his own name on the GT-R engine as proof of quality.


Among these Takumi, Takumi Kurosawa served as Team Leader, which is the highest honor of all Takumi. Craft Sports has now signed a contract with Mr. Kurosawa, the legendary master of the GT-R.
Kurosawa built R32 to R35 engines one by one with passion and pride as a master craftsman at Nissan Motor’s historic Yokohama plant.He set out on his own to explore the full potential of the GT-R and he builds the ultimate engines by overhauling them.


There is the knowledge, experience and impeccable skill that he has cultivated over many years. Precise techniques and absolute sense without the slightest deviation. This is truly a Godlike work.
Takumi and Craft Sports have developed special menus to bring out the ultimate potential of the RB26 and VR38 engines which are based on the original engines.


Craft Sports, a GT-R specialist dealer, and Takumi Kurosawa, a master of the GT-R, have teamed up to launch a major project that will leave its mark on the long history of the GT-R.

But both VR38 and RB26 are after all mass-produced engines. Efficiency and cost were the top priorities. The passion of the engineers and myself has never been able to be realized anywhere until now.
Craft Sports was the one who said to me, “Let’s build the real VR38 and RB26 together”.

I thought I could build a real GT-R engine here.
Craft Sports truly understood my aspirations, and they also provided me with a better environment than it was at Nissan.

There are a lot of custom and tuned parts on the market, but they are not the real thing. The real engine is the one with 100% of the potential of the original parts. I can make that happen.

The RB26DETT engine is a high performance engine that was developed with the sole purpose of winning the All Japan Touring Car Championship, which was competed in Group A vehicles at the time of its development.

Originally designed for 315ps, it was robust enough to handle more than 500 to 600ps with proper tuning. It is said to have produced as much as 800 horsepower in the qualifying rounds of the Japan Touring Car Championship.

In order to bring this high-performance engine to the market, voluntary regulations and cost-cutting measures were required, and mass production had to be carried out at a reduced level of performance. Although the RB26DETT is popular as a masterpiece, the engine that was put on the market does not have the original performance. Traces of detuning can be seen in various places.

To increase the horsepower, there are methods such as increasing the bore, installing external parts such as big turbochargers, camshafts, computers, etc. However, this is not always the correct tuning, and can lead to engine imbalance and over-specification, which can lead to engine damage.

It is enough to unleash the parts that have been sealed up by the times and restore the original performance of the RB26DETT. Only a master craftsman who has been dedicated to the GT-R can understand the detuned parts of the RB26DETT. Further, it helps the engine last longer.  Stick to the factory original parts. This is the belief of Takumi.

Here is a picture of the exhaust manifold of BNR32 and BCNR33.

Compared to the inner diameter of the gasket, the inner diameter of the exhaust manifold is 10mm narrower. When the gasket is removed, the area where the gasket does not touch the manifold is covered with black carbon, so the difference is obvious at a glance. The exhaust manifold was narrowed by 10mm from the original design in order to meet the 280ps voluntary regulations.

The gaskets, on the other hand, were manufactured as originally designed to keep development costs down.

These two problems resulted in an imbalance between the exhaust manifold bore and the gasket bore. The size of this imbalance would not change even if new parts were ordered.

Takumi said that this is a typical example of two barriers: voluntary regulations and development costs. However, it is fortunate that the gasket remains the same as originally designed, allowing us to grind off the exhaust manifold bore and widen it.

As you can see, traces of detuning have been left everywhere. Also, with Takumi’s many years of experience and techniques such as port correction, step correction, and internal burr polishing, it is possible to release the true performance of the RB26DETT. Takumi can restore the RB26DETT to its original condition.

Basics Overhaul by Takumi

For early detection of problems and preventive maintenance, all parts are disassembled and measured in detail, and each part is checked by our expert eyes.

After that, in addition to carbon removal, the performance of the engine is restored through manual cleaning and polishing, using sandblasting, ultrasonic cleaners, auto parts cleaners, etc., as needed. (Contents may vary depending on the menu).

Rubber parts, O-rings, seals, gaskets, lubricants, and other consumables are all replaced. In menu 2, bolts that may be subject to metal fatigue will be replaced to improve quality. The skilled craftsman, who knows the GT-R engine inside and out, will incorporate their knowledge and carry out measures and adjustments based on experience.

He Skyline GT-R was built to win races. Group A entry requirements are a minimum of 2,500 units produced in a 12-month period and 4 seats or more. Since the engine was mass-produced to participate in the race, the accuracy of the RB26DETT is somewhat inferior to the VR38DETT of the R35.

Also, at that time, the technology was not as established as it is today. The RB26DETT is assembled with the technology of the VR38DETT, the highest engine of today, and is adjusted and assembled with high precision valve clearances.

Considering the thermal expansion, the valve clearances are adjusted to the original design dimensions by controlling the valves in a room with constant temperature and humidity for 7 hours for cast iron and 4 hours for aluminum. After that, the clearance between the 24 valves is adjusted in microns to ensure that both the intake and exhaust valves open and close without error.

To increase engine power, the key is how much air (air mixture) is drawn into the engine.
The more air is drawn in, the more explosive power is generated. This is why Takumi’s overhaul focuses on “aerodynamics”.

Parts such as cylinder heads, cylinder blocks, and manifolds are made by casting. The surfaces of cast products are covered with fine bumps unique to casting. This surface area is called the casting surface. In port correction polishing, the roughness of the cast surface of the port is smoothed out. Furthermore, our unique polishing technique, developed through years of knowledge and experience of Takumi, is more than just a mirror finish.

A step is a difference that forms at the joints between machined parts. If these steps remain, air flow and efficiency will be affected. Efficiency is improved by widening the inside diameter while correcting the steps.

He inside of the engine is left with a lot of burrs from casting scars. These burrs can create resistance to air and oil flow. In addition, the burrs that are removed by vibration circulate with the oil, damaging the engine interior. These burrs are removed by polishing.  

This process can only be done by a master craftsman who knows the GT-R engine inside and out. All the work is done by hand with great care and sensitivity. This is one of the reasons why the performance is higher than that of a new car.

High-precision weight balancing to 1/100 g

The weight balance of the V-type engine is exquisitely maintained. This is a high-precision technique that only the master craftsmen who have left their names on the VR38DETT have mastered. The weight balancing is done with a precision of 1/100 g. Even the top and bottom of the connecting rods are precisely balanced.

This technology is also applied to the RB26DETT for balancing. This is the highest precision by the master craftsman who has been building the VR38DETT for many years.

No need to change the vehicle registration.

Upgrades by Crafts Sports are based on the factory standard and are mainly fine-tuning. Therefore, we do not change the displacement such as replacing the cylinder block. All the menu items are subject to vehicle inspections.

To prevent customers from waiting, we have a wide range of parts in stock. Based on our long years of experience, we stock a wide range of parts that are expected to be replaced.

Based on Nissan factory original parts, NISMO Heritage Parts are available for parts that are no longer manufactured. For parts that cannot be covered by these parts, we use external parts selected by Takumi as needed.

The biggest concern for Skyline GT-R owners is the discontinuation of parts. Also, the price of new parts is rising every 6 months to a year. Craft Sports will stock new parts while they are still available.

Furthermore, Crafts Sports is a member of the Nippon Automobile Parts and Components Aftermarket Association (NAPAC). Craft Sports is a member of NAPAC, the Japanese Auto Parts and Components Aftermarket Association.  Craftsport is capable of doing this because we are the GT-R specialty dealer!

(Some parts have already been discontinued and are not sold as NISMO Heritage Parts.  We will check the condition of these parts carefully and either reuse them or install selected external parts or parts developed by our company).

The RB26DETT is an inline 6-cylinder engine that Nissan produced from 1984 to 2004. It was developed exclusively for the Skyline GT-R, Nissan’s famous sports car.

2 Throttle Refresh & Strengthen Set

Deterioration of the throttle lip seal causes air leakage. The return spring collar is a plastic product and will crack.

Although they are deteriorated parts, this set of throttle lip seals and return spring collars are used because they are not available as spare parts.

This timing belt is designed to withstand high engine temperatures and sudden changes in revolution and torque to maximize the potential of the RB26DETT.
The core wire is made of aramid fiber, which is used in bulletproof clothing and undersea cables.

1.Port Correction and Polishing【Takumi】

Rough surface of the cast surface created by the manufacturing process causes air convection inside the port, which results in resistance. The casting surface inside the port is polished by hand. In addition, the unique polishing technique developed by Takumi, based on his long years of knowledge and experience, is not just a simple mirror finish. This will improve the response of the engine and lead to an increase in torque at low and mid speeds.

2.Step Correction【Takumi】

Steps that occur at the joints between machined parts can affect air flow and efficiency if left unchecked. Takumi corrects these steps by hand and widens the bore diameter to improve efficiency.
This improves the response of the engine and leads to increased torque at mid to low speeds. Exhaust manifold polishing as explained above is also done with this menu.

3.High-precision measurement and high-precision valve clearance adjustment 【Takumi】

First, 7 hours for cast iron and 4 hours for aluminum are controlled in a room with constant temperature and humidity, and the dimensions are adjusted according to the design. Then, the opening/closing timing of a total of 24 valves is adjusted in 1/1000 mm increments using VR38DETT technology to ensure that both intake and exhaust valves operate without error.
This is the true value of Takumi who has been building the VR38DETT for many years. This will lead to improved response and torque.
( Replace the shims when adjustment is necessary. A maximum of 24 shims will be used. The number of shims required will vary depending on the results of the inspection.)

4.1/100 g high-precision weight balancing 【Takumi】

If the weight balance is not adjusted, it will result in engine vibration and power loss. 1/100 g high-precision balancing technology has been mastered by Takumi, who has left his name on the VR38 DETT. This technology is also incorporated into the RB26DETT for balance adjustment.
This is the highest precision of Takumi who has been building the VR38DETT. This helps to reduce vibration and improve response.

5.Polishing burrs inside the engine【Takumi】

A lot of burrs are left inside the engine from casting scars. The remaining burrs cause resistance to air and oil. The burrs that are removed by vibration circulate with the oil and damage the engine interior. These burrs are carefully polished and removed by Takumi. This improves response and at the same time protects the engine by eliminating the parts that cause resistance.
Also, by chamfering the edges inside the engine, the flow of coolant and oil will be improved and the engine will be finished to the same level as a racing engine.

6.Valve guide replacement, valve seat cutting, and valve clearance measurement【Takumi】

The valve guide is a part that supports the valve and releases heat from the valve. The valve guide becomes worn due to the load applied over many years by the up-and-down movement of the valve, causing the valve to rattle and lose its position. As a result, when the valve is closed, it is not sealed, resulting in compression leakage and power loss. This also reduces heat dissipation and causes uneven wear on the valve body.
The valve guide is replaced, the valve seat is cut, and the valve seats are adjusted to ensure an even contact. Since the valve clearance changes when the seat is cut, it is necessary to measure the valve clearance.
This is not a 1/1000 mm high-precision valve clearance adjustment, but a measurement and
adjustment within the manufacturer’s standard values.
( Shims should be replaced when adjustment is required. A maximum of 24 shims are used. The
number of shims required will vary depending on the inspection results.)

7.Turbocharger overhaul(BNR32/BCNR33 only

The turbocharger is disassembled at a specialized repair shop, tested for oil leakage and actuator operation, and overhauled using an overhaul kit.
Then, the rotors are rebalanced, cleaned and polished, and all the work is done manually by our craftsmen.
Since the factory original turbocharger for BNR32/BCNR33 is discontinued, Craft Sports has searched for a way to overhaul the turbocharger. It is possible to replace the turbocharger with a BNR34 or N1 turbocharger, but the cost will be high, so we suggest an overhaul.

・The main parts such as metal, seals, bearings, etc. will be inspected during disassembly, and any defective parts will be repaired at an additional cost.

・In rare cases, overhauls are not possible due to the discontinuation of parts. In such cases, it is necessary to replace the turbocharger with a factory original BNR34 turbocharger.


・If repairs are not possible after an overhaul is requested, an inspection fee will be charged and the price for replacement will be different. In that case, we will inform you separately.


・The BNR34 turbocharger is not supported for overhaul because there is no overhaul kit for this turbocharger.

8.BNR34 Stock Turbocharger Replacement

The BNR32/BCNR33 stock turbocharger is no longer manufactured, and the factory original BNR34 turbocharger is a ball bearing turbocharger, which greatly improves response.
This menu is for customers who wish to replace with a new turbocharger.

If repairs are not possible after an overhaul is requested, an inspection fee will be charged and the price for replacement will be different. In that case, we will inform you separately.
Also, since the turbocharger of BNR34 is not available for overhaul kit, customers who wish to have a new turbocharger should choose this option.

9.WPC Treatment 【Takumi】

WPC treatment is a surface improvement technique in which compressed gas is mixed with fine particles of the desired material on the surface of a metal product, and the mixture is subjected to a high-speed collision. This process improves the fatigue strength, sliding motion, and seizure resistance of the metal product. It also reduces noise and improves response.
This WPC treatment, which is used in the racing world, is applied to crank metal and connecting rod metal.

10.DLC Coating【Takumi】

DCL coating is a technique that creates a nano-level thin film on a metal surface to achieve an unprecedentedly low coefficient of wear, and its main purpose is to improve wear resistance.

The VR38DETT has been applied to the valve lifters, which are susceptible to wear, from the beginning. By applying DLC treatment to the RB26DETT valve lifters, the engine will be of R35 (VR38DETT) quality.This is also a racing industry technology.

11.Water Pump Replacement

He water pump is a part that is often replaced multiple times during the course of maintenance. Since it is obvious that the water pump will be discontinued, we do not include it in the basic fee of this menu because we will not replace it if there is no problem using it as it is.
We will suggest replacement according to the inspection results, but if you would like to replace it when you do the engine overhaul, please add it as an option.

12.Crystal Coating

Crystal coating is a special coating technique that forms a unique, rough, shrunken pattern, unlike ordinary smooth surface coatings. The cover is painted on the face of the engine compartment.
The coating is not only for aesthetic purposes, but also to reduce tappet noise.
*We carefully check for damage before removal, but there may be cases where damage already exists before removal due to aging, deterioration, etc. Please note that we are not responsible for any damage that occurred prior to removal.
*The ornament will be painted after it is removed. Although we will work carefully, please be aware that scratches and deformation may occur.

13.Piston WPC +molybdenum coating【 Takumi 】

The molybdenum coating on the skirt of the VR38DETT stock piston is applied to the Craft Sports pistons. This greatly improves lubricity and wear resistance. The RB26DETT pistons are now the same standard as VR38DETT pistons.
This is a technology known only by Takumi who has been building the VR38DETT.

The deposit will be applied to the overhaul fee. The remaining balance and additional charges will be invoiced at the time of delivery. Payment can be made in cash or by bank transfer.

  • The customer will be asked to sign the prescribed contract form. Upon receipt of the contract and the contract fee, the contract is finalized. Cancellation is not accepted after the contract is signed and the engine is received.
  • Please note that we can only accept a limited number of vehicles, so reservations are required on a first-come, first-served basis. We will let you know when we plan to accept your order at the time of reservation. Please allow plenty of time for your request as it may vary depending on the progress of the work. The actual start of the work may be delayed due to the progress of the work.
  • We will not be able to keep your baggage or valuables in the car.
  • Please note that the length of time we keep your car may vary depending on the condition of the inside of the engine and the work to be done.  We have a wide variety of parts in stock, but in the unlikely event that we need to replace a part that is not in stock, we will order it in. In addition, we will provide you with an estimate and proposal as necessary in case of additional charges such as boring, honing, or parts replacement that are not on the menu. We will inform you the exact date of delivery as soon as the work is completed.
  • We will not be able to return the engine until the work is completed, so please leave the engine with us well in advance.
  • We also accept requests for the engine alone. The engine removal labor and vehicle storage fee of ¥200,000- will be discounted from the base price, but the customer will be responsible for shipping the engine to and from the shop.
  • We do not sell individual parts at this time.
  • For security reasons, we do not allow visitors to view the work, enter the work are or meet with Takumi Kurosawa. The facility is fully equipped with security systems such as surveillance cameras and motion sensors. Unauthorized access to the facility is prohibited. Please be assured that your car and engine are kept in a secure environment.
  • We do not accept inquiries by phone or in person regarding the progress of work, as this may interfere with our work (except in the case of an emergency). E-mail will be used to respond to inquirie. We will inform you of the progress of the work periodically.
  • No loaner car is available for the overhaul menu.
  • We record each progress of the work with photos. We will update the customer on the progress of the work and present an album as a memory of the overhaul after the work is completed. We may also use the photos taken for advertising on SNS and other media. We will ask you whether it is OK to post the photos on SNS or not when we receive your car, and we would be grateful for your cooperation. (We will not post anything that can identify you, such as license plate numbers, interior and exterior information, etc.)
  • Please note that we do not accept any parts that are brought in by customers for replacement or installation. If you wish to have any maintenance other than those on the menu, we will arrange it separately at a maintenance shop after the overhaul is completed.
  • Prices are subject to periodic revision depending on the availability of parts. Thank you for your understanding.
